5 floors that make all the difference to your bathroom

Does it need to match the mosaic in the shower? Should you go for large or small tiles? Clean white or colour contrast? Terrazzo or waxed concrete? Whether it's a question of aesthetics or if it’s about all the technical aspects, (i.e. low maintenance), choosing your bathroom floor can lead to a lot of questions. Here are our top tips (with a rundown of our favourite materials) to bring a bit of personality to your bathroom.

Terrazzo or nothing?

Beige with a splash of colour, often black and white, sometimes like Italy in the 80s, and always with a touch of Dolce Vita... One thing is for sure: it’s always on trend. You guessed it: Terrazzo. Often only found in small areas on a splashback or a worktop, here the owner has stretched it from the floor to walls, which creates unity between the shower cubicle and the rest of the bathroom. Combined with a white striated tile and a brass rail, the terrazzo's detailing adds some sparkle and sophistication to the room. It feels like a hotel (but better).

Trompe-l’œil

You've heard this argument time and time again: wooden floors and bathtubs will never go together. But maybe it’s time to rethink this: take a look at this bathroom designed by Alexandra, our content producer. To ensure continuity between this room and the rest of the flat, without forfeiting the downsides of wood, she installed parquet-effect tiles into the room. This design creates the perfect illusion, and reduces the budget and overall floor maintenance. Sounds perfect to us!

Double trouble

When it came to furnishing her flat, designer Elise Chalmin had two guiding principles: choose materials that go together to simplify sourcing, and create a premium look with a couple of carefully-chosen details. This mission was truly accomplished, right down to the bathroom! While the water-green tiles create a colourful scene, the large grey cement tiles bring some calm to the situation (and to the budget!). A few scraps from the floor were even used to make the worktop for the basin area and to add to that made-to-measure feeling. Your dream bathroom is waiting for you!

Dreaming of another place…

Do you swear by organic materials that start to look blissfully weathered over time? Are you dreaming of a bathroom that makes you feel like you’re permanently on holiday? Then, waxed concrete is for you! Take inspiration from interior designer Quitterie de Pascale: make sure you hire a specialised craftsman to avoid cracks and other (not so nice) surprises. When applied to the floor, the waxed concrete creates a soft and luminous feeling, allowing you to disconnect. Now, dive into a nice warm bath.

Mix and match

Natural oak fronts that add warmth to a piece of furniture, textured walls and bold cement tiles. If you keep your eyes closed, you may be imagining a contemporary kitchen. However, this also works in the bathroom. The proof is here: this layout really highlights the materials that are used. The sink unit forms a timeless base, while the black and white floor with its geometric shapes adds an eye-catching twist. The last step is… do the same thing in your home!
